Friday five favourite: Traditional hymns

9 08 2013

There’s a reason these hymns have lasted a long time, we live in a time when there’s new worship music out all the time, but move on even 5 years, let alone decades, and which ones are you still singing? There’s a whole tonne of modern hymns coming out which are also great, but these below truly have stood the test of time.

I’ve tried wherever possible to find congregational versions rather than performances, because worship is not about a performance, it’s every person individually, coming together to make the most beautiful and powerful sound! (And that doesn’t even have to be tuneful!)

How great Thou art

Favourite bit:

And when I think that God his son not sparing,
Sent him to die – I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home- what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Thine be the glory

Favourite bit:

For our Lord now liveth
Death has lost it’s sting!

Thine is the glory, risen conqu’ring Son,
Endless is the vict’ry, Thou o’er death hast won.

And can it be

Favourite bit:

My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

Amazing Grace

I couldn’t find a traditional version of this on YouTube that I liked, and I know my Dad really hates it when people take old hymns and “think they can do better by adding a bit in”, but I do like this, so excuse the modernisation for this post!
Favourite bit:

When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.

To God be the glory

Same with this one, although actually I’ve always prefered the modernised version here. The words are still there, the same meaning and depth to them, but a slightly less “twee” tune!
Favourite bit:

The vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

A couple of others that just missed the cut:

What are your favourite traditional hymns?

Friday Five Favourite: Latin & Ballroom Dances

19 07 2013

Or more specifically, dances from Strictly!

The Apprentice finished this week and so I was trying to think what came next, Strictly starts September/October time normally, so it’s a bit of a wait, but I realised I was ready for it to come around again, I’m missing it! So with that in mind, here are 5 of my favourite dance styles as seen on Strictly πŸ™‚

Viennese Waltz – Denise & James

Jive – Jill & Darren

Charleston – Chris & Ola

Quickstep – Matt & Aliona

American Smooth – Harry & Aliona

Friday five favourite: Things about Wimbledon

28 06 2013

Some years I watch a bit of Wimbledon, some a bit more, others I practically miss it altogether, but this year has been one of the years I’ve really got into it πŸ™‚ So here we go, five favourite things about Wimbledon πŸ™‚

  • Mansour Bahrami – most entertaining Tennis player on the planet!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6Vqp6UveIU
  • Formalities & Traditions: All the cute white outfits, addressing the players as Mr & Miss, the middle Sunday of rest, all those little traditions!

  • The stress of any game with a Briton in it – every break point is like another year added to my life!

  • The wonderful patriotism brought out in us, almost like going back to the Royal Wedding, Jubilee and the Olympics!

  • Strawberries, cream and Pimms – I haven’t got round to using the Wimbledon excuse to binge yet, not had the time, but it will happen! Or I’ll make up for missing it afterwards πŸ™‚

Friday five favourite: Chick flicks part 2

21 06 2013

Continued from last week:

To avoid too much judgement I’m doing chick flicks, not just “films”, because if I did my five favourite films I’d get looked down on!
The other key word here is “favourite”, not “Friday five best”, so I’m totally entitled to my own opinion πŸ™‚

So here are this weeks! Last week were more classic, these are, bar one, a bit more recent!

27 Dresses

just gutted that the trailer barely covers Benny & The Jets!

Friday five favourite: Chick flicks part 1

14 06 2013

To avoid too much judgement I’m doing chick flicks, not just “films”, because if I did my five favourite films I’d get looked down on!
The other key word here is “favourite”, not “Friday five best”, so I’m totally entitled to my own opinion πŸ™‚

This has been so hard to get down to five, first I eliminated things like Little Women that seem to straddle the border between classic literature and chick flicks, great as it is! Even then, nope, it still wasn’t working, so here’s part 1 of 2, it’s going to have to be a list of 10, there’s just too many!

This week I’ve focused on what are probably some slightly older ones mainly, some proper classics πŸ™‚

10 Things I hate about you

I spend most of this film wanting Julia Stiles’ hair… seriously!

Sleepless in Seattle

I was first introduced to this by my mum and while we both ended up with it on DVD, if it was on telly we’d still sit down together to watch it. In the film the girls talk along with a film they watch that they know really well – I do it with this film!

Clueless

You know you’ve seen a film too many times when you spot a few clips in the trailer than aren’t in the film.
But worse, when you realise they used a different take in the trailer on on scene than in the film… “I totally paused” was totally different!

These 2 are a little more recent, but still fall under the ‘classic’s heading I think πŸ™‚

What are your favourite chick flicks?

Friday five favourite: Crisps!

17 05 2013

I go through phases with crisps. I won’t eat them for years even months, purely because they’re not something I think of to buy, but when I have them they’re pretty good! Here’s another top five… Happy Friday!

What are your favourite crisps?

Walkers Prawn Cocktail

Pringles Ridges Ready Salted

Walkers Sensations Gently Infused Lime and Thai Spices

Kettle Chips Lightly Salted

Friday Five Favourite: Kids TV Shows

19 04 2013

So I did a blog about a year ago on my favourite children’s TV shows, but really that was preschool shows. I said at some point in the future I might do a set of more primary school aged shows, so here it is! Happy nostalgia Friday to you if you remember these πŸ™‚

It was REALLY hard to get this list down to 5, so I’ve saved some like Kenan & Kel and SM:tv live for a secondary school list somewhen and hope I don’t have too many then!

Friday five favourite: Rend Collective Experiment songs

29 03 2013

Last year I brought you my five favourite Easter songs, so I was wondering what to do this Good Friday. I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite songs by one of my favourite bands at the moment. Last year I was particularly struck by “Eastery” elements to a lot of their songs, and I guess you might pick that up below.

It seems I first heard Rend Collective Experiment when they did a video called Worship on an iPhone and until today I never realised that was the same band as that I’ve come to love in the last couple of years!

Their style is so different to anything else in the Christian music circles at the moment. They have the most interesting instruments (check out the stick thing in Build Your Kingdom Here). And the lyrics are superb. Sometimes we can get so struck by a melody, when really the words are the depth and real meaning of the piece.
As Sophie Fisher says in the wonderfully tacky film, Music and Lyrics: “A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. But then, as you get to know the person, that’s the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath.”

So here we go, in no particular order, some lively, some very chilled out. Most are from their second album, but there’s one from the first!
Listen to all 5 and tell me you’re not a Rend convert!
