My 2012 reading so far…

18 05 2012

One of my new years resolutions this year was to read more, to finish books, and this included cancelling my magazine subscription. It’s now May, so how am I doing?
My friend Alana reads a LOT of books! If you check out her blog you’ll see book reviews on there all the time! There’s no way I match up to that, but I am on my fourth book this year, which doesn’t seem too bad.
I was hoping to alternate trashy with respectable, and while Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis has been permenantly next on the list but keeps getting pushed back, I don’t think it’s been an entirely bad selection of books!

One DayDavid Nicholls

one day

I always like something that’s a bit different. This book is set over 20 years, but we only ever meet the characters on St Swithuns day, 15th July, each year. We follow Emma and Dexter from the time they finish university through to their early 40s and see what’s going on each time. And even so, the plot still flows well!
I originally saw this in the cinemas and thought it was fab. Often when you read a book before seeing the film, you’re disappointed by the adaptation, so this time I decided not to read it until later. To be honest it’s been a few months since I finished it now, but I definitely enjoyed the book even though I obviously knew the twists coming up (but had forgotten a fair few of them by the time I got to them!).

Silences and NonsensesAdrian Plass

silences and nonsenses

Other than the ‘fun’ poetry books you end up flicking through as a child, I’ve never had a book of poems before. I hated analysing poems at school, and I’m definitely not deep enough to get most poetry, but Adrian Plass is a hilarious, gifted, and very wise speaker and writer, so when I heard that his wife had lovingly collated his poems of the last 25 years into a single book, I thought I’d try to be all sophisticated and the like and give it a go.
The man’s a genius. I’ve had the privilege of having a chat with him before, albeit briefly, and he’s just as genuine in real life as in his writing. He’s done some tours and a book with Jeff Lucas, and they are both men who are not afraid to admit that they’re not perfect, and to share their faults openly! Such an encouragement, but also with a giggle!

The Time of my LifeCecelia Ahern

the time of my life

I’ve read every full book that Cecelia Ahern has written, and she’s brilliant! Her most well known book is P.S. I Love You, mainly because of the film a few years back, and this was her first book. Her first two books were relatively ‘realistic’, whereas since then every book has had some element of the supernatural. Not in a vampires or sorcery or dark way, not spells or incantations or anything like that, but in one book a women has an imaginary friend who’s actually real, in another we discover the place where all the missing things and the missing people go. Her imagination must be a fascinating place to be!
This book itself is about a woman who is called to a meeting with her life… I don’t want to go any more into it than that for fear of giving too much away!

The Irresistable RevolutionShane Claiborne

the irresistable revolution

I first heard Shane Claiborne speak at the Baptist World Youth Conference in Germany 2008. This was the first time I really heard anyone speak on Social Justice at any high level, and it was powerful. His book is no different. I can’t write huge amounts as I’ve only read just over 100 pages (although that was mainly all in one afternoon – an impressive feat for me!). I couldn’t put it down – Shane shares his experiences living out with the homeless as God calls us to love our neighbour. This book is challenging beyond belief – I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes from here!

In summary – I’d recommend any of these books to any of you!

New Years Resolutions – review #2

26 03 2012

So I’ve left it a bit longer this time between reviewing my progress with this again – it’s been a pretty busy time since the last review as we’ve been busy trying to find somewhere new to live, and I think that may reflect in some of these – particularly just in the fact that some will have lapsed from most of my effort portion each day going into the house hunt! We’ll see…

  • Quit Corrie – A-OK! Caught myself glancing at the front of the magazines in waitrose the other day, but still no desire to watch it 🙂
  • Watch less tele – Bit of a fail on this lately, definitely noticed a habit of any random tv around tea time, so this evening we cracked out Series 1 Episode 1 of Gilmore Girls 🙂 And hopefully kicking some of the other resolutions up a gear will help with this too…
  • Exercise – Fail. Was due to run yesterday but woke up feeling really rough… made an enquiry with a local swimming pool this weekend though – might try that
  • Violin & Piano – Fail. Was going to get my violin out last weekend when my housemates were out, but then one stayed in and I was too self concious to give it a go.
  • Sewing – Not too shabby! Spent quite a bit of time on it this weekend as I’ve been able to move on with my project, should be done soon – will need to find something new to make to keep this up!
  • Reading – Finished One Day quite a while back, finished the last of my magazine subscription so now I should have no excuse. I was going to start Mere Christianity but still found it a bit daunting, so I’m working through Silences And Nonsenses by Adrian Plass at the mo, and then today I got leant the new Cecelia Ahern book, which I should hopefully read pretty quickly, so that’s next!
All that said – I’ve not been reading anywhere near as often as I’d like to. On Saturday I spent a bit of time reading in the garden that was lovely. More of this weather might help!
  • Less of the irritating chattering – Who knows
  • Reduce time spent on social media – Proper fail. Again, like the TV one, need to improve some of the other resolutions to help with this one.
  • Learn to love God more – We’ve been going through a ‘season of prayer’ at church which has been really challenging and I do feel I’ve grown in it, and growing closer to God 🙂
  • Learn to think better of myself – Interestingly last week I heard a talk where they were saying about how we can be ugly and whatever and God loves us anyway. We can have our enthusiasm in Christ’s love for us to die for us… so this doesn’t necessarily mean I need to think better of myself does it? As long as I know that God does?
  • Have a more positive outlook – The whole house stuff lately has been stressful, but I’m mellowing about this. We won’t end up homeless. It’ll be ok!

Also, 5yearDiary is still going strong!

New Year’s Resolutions – one month in!

1 02 2012

A twelfth of the year has gone already! (While we’re on the subject, isn’t ‘twelfth’ a really fun word to spell?! no? just me?! oh well!).
This always seems a good time to see where we’ve got to so far with our new years resolutions so far, whether there’s any we need to kick into gear a bit more, any to encourage ourselves that are going well, or any that we just need to admit are long gone… I’ll give mine a look!
(On top of the list below, I’ve also succesfully kept a diary for a month, which was a sort of New Year’s Day impulse – not like a gushy emotional thing, just a little five year diary. My mum’s always kept one and the useful things she can look up are incredible! It’s been handy a few times lately, so thought it was time to start 🙂

  • Quit Corrie – Going well. Didn’t miss it at all the first couple of weeks, then ITV started showing trailers for Becky’s exit, and while I knew I was allowed to watch her last episode, I found myself wanting to know what was happening. That said, I watched her exit episodes last Monday evening and had no desire to carry on, so that’s good news!
  • Watch less tele – Definite improvement. My housemate and I spent the first few weeks watching a DVD in the evenings (The Harry Potter films and worked through Gavin and Stacey) and then went to our rooms to read, which was a great method, though the last week or so I’d say I’ve slipped a bit around teatime – there’s really nothing on around 7pm! But not watching tele with breakfast anymore, so that’s good! And I think our next evening films are going to be Back To The Future :), I’m currently also working through the DVD set of The Long Way Down
  • Exercise – utter fail: must try harder!
  • Spend more time either on my violin or improve at the piano – until last weekend fail, but I’ve found a song I’d like to teach myself and had a couple of short goes on my keyboard, but at least there’s a more specific target to start with
  • Get my sewing machine back out and use it – going well! got it out two or three weeks back and have got well into a project now 🙂
  • Read more, and not just easy reads – this one was mainly because in the last 6 months or even a year I don’t think I’ve actually managed to finish a book… Pretty much since I started driving I guess! So, to avoid easy reads, this year I started on Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, then fairly quickly realised that if I’m going to get back into the habit of reading, it might be more sensible to start with a more easy read. I’m now nearly 200 or so pages into One Day by David Nicholls and loving it, looks like I might manage it! I’ve also cancelled my magazine subscription after March, which should make it easier too…
  • Less of the irritating chattering – not really for me to say, but it’s not good
  • Reduce time spent on social media – not great, but a lot of unfollowing and a little unfriending has happened over twitter and facebook, which means I have less to scroll through which saves some time and means I’m not reading things I don’t care about as much!
  • Learn to love God more – doing better at making time for a quiet time in the morning
  • Learn to think better of myself – a couple of friends trying to help me with this, but it’s not easy
  • Have a more positive outlook – hmmm…

New Year’s ‘resolutions’ 2012

31 12 2011

I’m not normally one for New Years Resolutions. Someone I know once said he didn’t as it wasn’t really necessary to wait for 1st January to make changes.

But sometimes I think we get lazy, and probably need the 1st January to prompt us to make changes that we know we need to make and would keep putting off otherwise.

So, I’m not sure I’m going to so much make New Year’s resolutions as much as these are some things I’m going to try to change next year. Some are more ambitious than others, and those seem to be the ones that are less measurable!

I guess they fall into categories:

Fairly average and straightforward resolutions

  • Quit Corrie (I know, I’m shocked too! – Though I should probably add, if they write out any major character, I’ll permit myself to watch that episode. My main reason for this addendum is because I know at some point they must be doing something for Betty 😦 )
  • Watch less tele – mainly try to cut back those times I have it on looking for something to watch rather than putting it on to specifically watch things.
  • Exercise more (also known as START exercising) and lose a little weight
  • Spend more time either on my violin or improve at the piano
  • Get my sewing machine back out and use it
  • Read more, and not just easy reads
  • Less of the irritating chattering
  • Reduce time spent on social media

A bit more deep, meaningful and more effort involved

  • Learn to love God more
  • Learn to think better of myself
  • Have a more positive outlook

I guess the first list are sort of nice ideas, the second list are a little more life-changing.

I’ve been working on this list for a week or two, so there may still be a couple of minor adjustments, but I think that’s pretty much it!

Do you have any resolutions this year? What’ve you gone for?
