New TV

8 08 2011

Those of you who know me will know I watch a fair amount of tv, but it’s a long time since I’ve watched anything new. This last week and a bit I’ve been on leave with very little to do since my holiday was cancelled and over the week I’ve caught a few new tv shows.

The IT Crowd

My brother told me a long time ago I should watch this. I caught episode 1 this afternoon and it’s looking like a good laugh! It’s almost a novelty these days to find a show that’s only 30min not an hour, and with the series each being so short, I think I might carry on with this one! The other bonus is that every episode is on 4od, so I can work my way through at any old pace!

Franklin & Bash

So, I saw a trailer for this with Mark-Paul Gosselaar of Saved By The Bell fame, alongside the guy that played the skateboard guy in Clueless! Seemed like something to check out! Basically it’s a law programme, which don’t normally interest me, but it really was quite funny in it’s own way. These aren’t ordinary lawyers! To be honest though, I’m just excited to see some 90s stars back on the tele ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d like to keep watching this but the episodes are an hour a piece. Again, they’re available on 4od, but expiring a month after they’re aired, so a little pressure to keep up!

Jonathan Creek

This felt like I was watching something with my parents. Very cleverly written, I was definitely completely drawn in to the one episode I watched, staying to the end to find out how it was done. But at an hour a time and a little drawn out, without catching the start of an episode unintentionally, I’m not sure I’d make the time to actively sit down and watch it again – happy to watch it if nothing else is on!

I’ve also been introduced to a couple of shows like Toddlers & Tiaras, which was one of the weirdest, disturbing shows ever – toddler beauty pageants, if they must exist, should not involve that much makeup, and definitely not bikinis!

While I’ve been writing this post I’ve watched another IT Crowd episode…. definitely light viewing!

The Daily Post: Describe your perfect meal

7 08 2011

This is relatively easy, but the more I think about it, the more things I want to include! And for someone with a relatively small appetite, that doesn’t really work, but here goes!

Starter:
I’m not a big fan of starters, as I’ve said, I sometimes have a pretty small appetite. I’ve previously learnt that soup is a dangerous starter as it can completely fill me, but maybe some nibbles or something. Nah, let’s skip the starter!

Main:
Curry!! But I’ll go into a little more detail. Definitely chicken, maybe Korma or Tikka Masala or Tikka Makhani etc, or even a mixture! With pilau rice, cooked so it’s gone a little crispy at the edges, but generally cooked just right!

Dessert:
Again this could be dealt with in one word: Chocolate ๐Ÿ™‚ I think Ben & Jerry’s needs to be involved, probably Chocolate Fudge Brownie or Half Baked, with maybe some actual brownie, slightly microwaved. Ooo and squirty cream ๐Ÿ™‚ Squirty cream is something that improves any dessert it’s added to ๐Ÿ™‚

Drink:
See now I’d say a chocolate drink or a smoothie, but if it has to go with a meal then we want something less stodgy. As there’s been no mention of veg yet, lets go with a Pimms, totally filled with fruit ๐Ÿ™‚

Location:
So it depends how realistic this is meant to be. If I can mess with nature, then definitely outside in the strong sunshine with a light cool breeze. However, if this is real life, then that would include battling with flies, wasps and all sorts, therefore inside!

Monkey tail beards

14 06 2011

I learnt something new today, courtesy of the latest Stuff Christians Like blogpost:

“Recently, a friend of mine told me that the David Crowder Band was breaking up. I like them, both musically and beardedly. In that order. I never put a personโ€™s facial hair above their music. Thatโ€™s one of the rules I live my life by. Unless theyโ€™ve got a monkey tail, which apparently is a thing now.

Whatโ€™s that you say? Well, you grow one sideburn very long. Then you grow it into a beard that goes down one side of your face, over your chin and finally curves under your nose like the tail of a monkey. Then you move to Brooklyn.”

I googled and found you an example
monkey tail beard

I think this falls under the thing-that-would-be-fun-to-do-as-you-shave-off-a-beard-but-not-to-keep category! I wonder if Dave Gorman had this in his list of drawings when he nearly shaved his beard in his Googlewhack Adventure…?

The Daily Post: Any vehicle

12 04 2011

If you could pilot any vehicle, real or fictitious, what would it be?

To me, this felt pretty obvious – the DeLorean

DeLorean Back to the Future

What other vehicle does roads, air and time?! Now, those of you who know me will know my opinion of aeroplanes (they shouldn’t stay in the air), but this is different. Just like a helicopter or a space rocket, you can see and feel how it’s staying up, so that problem is eliminated!

The only issue I may have is getting the guts to reach 88mph!

“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!”

Everything

6 04 2011

I want to tell you a story.

When I was at university, I went to the Christian Union meetings every Thursday. Two years ago, valentines day fell on a Thursday, and while we didn’t exactly have a theme to the evening, it was a bit special.

Our CU had about 200 people on the books, and an average attendance of maybe 150. Towards the end of the meeting we sang “How deep the Father’s love for us“, which is a beautiful song [hymn?] in itself.

Normally, at the end of a song we’d segue into another song, or sit and wait for someone to speak, but before any of that could happen, all the lights went out, and the following video came on…. no one sat down, we all stood, silently watching this video. I got goosebumps, and still do every time I watch it.

We were shown it in prayers at work today, and it reminded me of that evening, and I wanted to share this with you. A moving illustration of Grace.

And lyrics can be found here (youtube) or here (text)

April 1st 2011

1 04 2011

So last year I brought you a list of all the April Fools pranks I found (sadly several links have now broken), and intend to do the same again this year!

Let me know if you find any I’ve missed! …Or if any of these are actually true!

Some I missed are here, including:

————————————-
Added in the evening, other thing’s I’ve been made aware of this afternoon!:

And again this year, the BBC has published a list of 10 stories that could be April Fools pranks but aren’t

The Daily Post: Chocolate or Vanilla?

14 03 2011

I know I haven’t done this for a while, but today’s topic was so laughably easy that I just had to post!

Any of you who know me won’t even have to read this to know the answer – CHOCOLATE!

I’m still not sure I entirely believe in Vanilla. Vanilla is like the “plain” ice-cream, the one they start with to add stuff in to make all the other flavours. I’m not sure I’d go as far as saying it’s savoury, but you get my point!

Chocolate is gooey and flavourfull and just yummy!

Chocolate is also a bean and therefore good for you ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Someone recently was talking about their love of chocolate, and asked me “but do you eat it once a day?” my response was along the lines of “it’s more of a case of how many times a day!”

….great, now I want chocolate!!

If I ever met another Ineke

8 03 2011

If i ever met another Ineke I really don’t know how I’d cope.

I’ve met an Ineke before, but I’m named after her, so it’s not quite the same.

Recently at work we’ve started to get more people with the same name as our staff grows, but I’ve always assumed there’ll never be another Ineke. But what if there was? There *are* other Ineke’s in the UK, it’s not entirely infeasible. But I think I’d freak out.

Last summer I was at a conference/festival thing, and we were talking in groups about ‘what defines us.’ Well, as I spent the first couple of minutes telling them my name then having to answer questions on pronunciation and where it’s from, I said my name seems to be a lot of what I am!

If I met another Ineke who I was going to come into contact with regularly, I think that’d be really weird…

Teleportation

9 02 2011

I’ve not done that well with this post-a-week think, Quelle Suprise! But what I have done, is kept all the emails of post idea’s in a folder, and as and when I find the motivation, I’ll pick some out and use them, so here’s one I just found:

When teleportation is finally possible, where will you beam yourself first?

There’s actually a couple of questions you could take from this that would give very different answers, so I thought I’d try a couple of variations, and I’m sure I’ve missed out some other good’uns!

  • When teleportation is finally possible, where will you beam yourself first?
The other side of the planet. While the UK is getting warmer, when I’m at work we have a web page showing us the weather in all the partner country offices, and right now, Australia and New Zealand are the places to be!
  • When teleportation is finally possible, what one place would you have a permanent teleportation station?
I think Romsey. There’s many other places I’d love one, Bath being another major contender, but at the end of the day, I know most people in Romsey, my family’s there, and I go there far more often than Bath.
    …That or work!

The Daily Post: Snow Day

11 01 2011

“10th” January
How do you stay entertained when you are snowed in?

I decided to backtrack a day. I was away over the weekend and kinda missed this topic, so thought I’d do it today as today’s didn’t inspire me!

We had a snow day at the start of December if my memory serves me correctly. It snowed quite a bit overnight, so as is always the routine when snow is forecast that night, my alarm was set early, and straight away the radio and internet went on to see what I could find out. Trains were running in bits and pieces, but not reliably enough that I was convinced I’d get home again. After an hour or 2 of national rail observations, radio weather reports and contacting my boss we decided it was probably safest and best that I stay home that day.

By this time my other housemate, Alana, was up, and realising we were out of staple foods I went on an Emergency Food Run. We have a Co-op a 5-10minute walk away, so about 9.30am I headed out. My list was bread, milk, you know, emergency stuff! Well, sliced bread was all gone, so we got little rolls, normal milk was all gone too; the choices were single pints of posh organic stuff, or 6pints of “blue” milk, ie, full fat. My common sense told me the blue milk was better value for money, even if we didn’t finish it, and who knows how long we’d be stuck in anyway! (turns out it was only a day, but the milkman took a few days to resume his rounds!).

So that was it, bread and milk. Hmm, emergency stuff, should probably get some snacking stuff too…. So a bag of deluxe triple chocolate chip cookies and 2 slabs of chocolate? Yea that should do us!

The rest of the day was in the safe and warm. From what I remember the day was mainly film & tv! Alana went out to get some film and photos of the snow, but my walk to the shop was more than enough!

In the last couple of years I’ve had no urge to play in the snow at all. At uni it was great, as a house we went out to play, build a snowman, make snow angels, fall over in the park and have snowball fights. But in Guildford there just wasn’t that atmosphere. People have work to do, I don’t really know anyone other than my housemates, and I know of no parks near here at all(!)

Oh, and for a Canadian’s perspective on the snow, check out here!. (The observant of you will see that this is my housemate Alana!)
