OT Bible study book advice please!

21 09 2012

About a year ago, I starting using N.T. Wright’s “for everyone” books for my quiet time, I’ve worked through “Matthew for Everyone”, and one or two “Paul for Everyone” books, but after a year I’ve been a bit challenged by some gaping wholes in my Old Testament knowledge! I honestly have very little idea of the story of Daniel, and several others. Now much as I really like the format of the “for everyone” books, they’ve not done the whole Old Testament, yet.

So my question is, can you recommend any Book by Book Old Testament personal study books?! 🙂

Wisdom from a bookmark

1 09 2012

The last couple of weeks I’ve been clearing out my room at my parents house, and also had a bit of a clearout here as a result of that, which obviously was going to mean I found some fun bits and pieces in the process. I’m not sure there’ll be much worth sharing, but here’s a quote from a bookmark we kept in the office where I had my Saturday job:

“The customer is always right!
Mis-informed perhaps, inexact, stubborn, fickle, ignorant, even abysmally stupid, but never wrong.”

Friday Five Favourite: Textbooks I no longer need!

24 08 2012

I’m spending the week at my parents and among the many things I’m clearing out are some old textbooks. Some are a bit more specialist than others, especially those at university level, and so may not be that popular with Oxfam, and also some might even be worth more than giving away free, so I thought I’d put my current top five on here incase anyone is starting a course where they need them, or would just be interested!

Change

17 08 2012

“I don’t like change. Although there’s a few I’d like to make.”

I overheard someone say this today and it got me thinking, doesn’t this just sum up the negativity of our society?

The Olympics were so great for our countries morale, but it seems we’re now slipping back into what we’re used to: cynicism and grumpiness.

I’m not immune to this, I can be one of the worst, but this sentence just caught up so much of what bothers me. It sort of says “I only want things to change if they change for me, for my benefit.” The selfishness of this society.

Gosh, doesn’t this blog sound negative in itself! Apologies – Happy Friday all! 🙂

hotmail.com vs outlook.com

2 08 2012

So on Tuesday I heard that hotmail.com was being replaced with outlook.com and innocently went to outlook.com to check it out…. it looks *very* basic, *very* simple, in a way it looks more like something from 10-20 years ago than a step forward…
Oh, and did I mention, if you click on outlook.com, it then changes your hotmail.com to the new format when you go back to it!

As you may be able to tell, I’m not altogether overwhelmed so far…

If I open a new email, I have to adjust the size of the internet browser to get it to show anything other than a white screen
And when I sent these images to a friend to blur them, it turns out the “attach” button doesn’t even work! I had to flip back over to hotmail just to do the attaching – this doesn’t feel overly tested yet!

And then there’s the little things, like yes the fonts bigger and clearer, but now I have to scroll down to see all my folders on the left, rather than seeing everything at a glance…
Let’s be honest though, which looks like the newer version of the two?!

London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony Highlights

28 07 2012

I’m still completely blown away by last night. I thought it’d probably be some artsy fartsy representative work of our countryside, history and be a little bit dull to be honest.
The first 15min or so I thought I was right, but it greatly improved!
I’ve been trying to find the best bits to paste here, but there’s nothing official on youtube, so instead here’s links to some BBC videos.

  • BBC Highlights
  • Bond & The Queen – Do other countries think this is normal day-to-day for us?! Oh, and they both parachuted into the stadium, don’t believe me? watch it!
  • Mr Bean – I never ever expected the British sense of humour to be displayed in the opening ceremony, so to have this treat – utterly brilliant!
  • The torch lighting – This was outstanding. We’d all been speculating as to who might light the torch, but I don’t think anyone would have guessed this. A beautiful gesture. A part of the cauldron brought from each country, and lit by multiple representatives of the next generation. Amazing. (But still with a selection of the famous Olympians bringing it to the stadium to keep everyone from complaining!)
  • The Red Arrows – no major British event is complete without this!
  • There were definite fluctuations through the evening, from surreal to superb and back again several times, but overall just fantastic! (assuming we ignore Paul McCartneys minor muck-up against his backing track…!)

I was worried before it started that we’d just humiliate ourselves or be boring, but it was fantastic!

Friday five favourite: possibilites for lighting the Olympic Torch tonight

27 07 2012

So tonight is the official kick off of the London 2012 Olympic Games! (But how great is it that the first game of the games we won!

And of course, one of the biggest talking points is who will light the torch in the opening ceremony. The BBC have their own thoughts on it, and to be honest mine overlap a fair amount, but here they are!

  1. Sir Steve Redgrave
Definitely my top choice, this rower has won 5 Golds in 5 separate Olympics over 20 years for our country – very worthy of the honour!

  2. HRH Prince William
I know he’s not a sportsman, but he was involved in the Olympic bid to bring the games to London, and as a fan of a royals, it’d be great to see him do it!

  3. Roger Bannister
The first man to run a 4 minute mile!

  4. Her Majesty The Queen
So she’s not a sportswoman, and wasn’t involved in the bid directly. But this woman is incredible. In her 60th year on the throne, what greater way to top it off than give her this honour?!

  5. David Beckham
I never used to be a fan of Beckham, but with all the work he does for Sport Relief he’s definitely growing on me! It was a shame he was left out of the Team GB Football team, so yea he’s not an Olympian, but again he was involved in the bid to bring the games here, so maybe lighting the torch would make up for being omitted from the squad!

P.S. This is my 100th blog post! Happy hundreth!

Who do you think should like the flame tonight?

Not a rant at crazy drivers, almost pity!

23 07 2012

So last week I was driving home from work and there’s a bit where there are cars parked along the edge of the road and so only room for one car at a time to go down the road. Oncoming there was a car that was trying to parallel park and so I stopped to wait patiently to let it do so. Behind it was a learner driver and an ice-cream van so I just decided to wait and let them all go through. The cars behind me had other plans. Two cars pulled out round me, in front, and then had to go round onto the pavement (narrowly avoiding a pedestrian) to get round the learner and the van. I mean what did they gain from that? 20 seconds off their journey? Ironically, as I then let through another 5 or so cars, they all thanked me, apart from the one person I knew, who didn’t recognise me and just drove on through!

But as I drove home it dawned on me. Who is going to get home flustered and stressed, and who is going to get home peaceful? Who is more likely to have a stupid accident one day?

I didn’t feel rushed, it looks like patience pays off 🙂

Do you see her face? – Gilmore Girls quote

18 07 2012

“They talk so fast by they talk so true” as J.D. would say!

I’m currently working my way through the box set of Gilmore Girls and loving it! Coming towards the end of season 4 this evening there was an episode where a guy was listening to a love advice tape – the sort of thing that sounds like Oprah etc and most people would totally ignore, but there was this one quote that was actually pretty lovely:

Whose phone calls or visits are never unwanted or too long? Do you see her face?
Who would you most like to have in your life to ward off moments of loneliness? Do you see her face?
When you travel, who would make your travels more enjoyable? Do you see her face?
When you’re in pain, who would you most like to comfort you? Do you see her face?
When something wonderful happens in your life, a promotion at work, a successful refinancing, who do you want to share the news with? Do you see her face?
Whose face appears to you, my friend? Whose face?

So cute 🙂
