The Daily Post: Who deserves more credit?

2 01 2011

2nd January
Name someone who deserves more credit than they get. And for bonus points, how to change things so they get more
I didn’t think I could think of anything to post for this one, but then it occured to me, that while third world producers get a fair amount of credit in the circles I tend to move in (though they could always get more…), I reckon there’s probably a lot more that could be done.
There’s been a huge improvement in the last decade or so, from just chocolate, drinks and bananas early on, to pasta, toilet roll, and even cotton buds these days!
But there is still so much that isn’t fairly traded. I’m no where near as active as I should be in focussing my shopping on fair trade, but even if I were, there’s still many things out there that you just can’t get fair trade, and so the workers behind these products do go unappreciated and without the credit (and financial payment) they deserve for their work.

The Daily Post: Three countries

1 01 2011

Over 2011 WordPress has set a challenge to blog more. I’m sure I won’t but I thought I may as well give it a go. Their suggestions are to blog daily or weekly, or just more than you currently do, so I’m just going to pick and choose as and when I have the time and something to say on the subject!

1st January
List three countries you’d like to visit, and why you want to go.
This will probably end up pretty similar to my previous post, but as I consider where I might go on holiday this year (or in the future when I could hypothetically afford to travel a little more), here are some of those on my list:

  • Italy
I’ve wanted to go here for a while now. A little warmer than here (and apparently very warm in the summer 🙂 ), and I’m a fan of Italian food, this is definitely on my list. On top of which, I should be able to get a plane (it’s not *too* far, I might just cope!) or a train or even drive (when I can!), and it wouldn’t cost a complete fortune. My parents went to Italy this year, or I suppose last year now! and mum keeps telling me how much I’d like it. Definitely on the list.
  • Australia/New Zealand
I’m going to put these 2 into one as once you’re on the other side of the planet you may as well make the most of it and multi task! Again this is a weather related thing. I’ve been told of just shocking temperatures in Oz which sounded awesome when it was -9C here! Equally there’s no language barrier with these places (I speak zero Italian!) and so I imagine it could just be like a hot Britain! New Zealand is supposed to be beautiful, and there’s some pretty iconic things to see in Australia.
  • America
It’s hard to know where to start with this one. Such a diverse country, so much to see. This and Down Under are both going to have to wait til I have a bit more cash in the bank, and can either get over my fear of flying or find an alternative, but there’s so much I want to see over the pond. New York definitely, probably Florida, California, and all the stuff in between!

Maybe a round the world Cruise is in order!

My Perfect Country

18 11 2010

This sounds like a Junior School homework title, but it’s something I was thinking about the other day, so I thought I’d split it into categories, and look at it a bit more!

Climate
This is what first got me thinking, as winter is well and truly settling in I’m not enjoying it at all. At work we have a little Intranet style site which happens to have the weather in each of our partner countries. Right now, we have highs of maybe 7 here, whereas down in Oz, they might be at 19 in the middle of the night!! I definitely could do with an Australian climate!

Food
I like food, particularly chocolate. I’m a huge curry fan and love a bit of chilli or bolognaise, but Englad is where you can get all of these easily – I’ve no idea how multicultural other countries food is, so while I’m not a huge fan of some typically English foods, I do love the variety here, and of course Cadburys.

Public Transport
That is a bit pants here. You always here about the efficiency of public transport in Europe, and public services, I guess let’s throw a little Europe in here.

Maybe there’s more to consider here, couldn’t think of any more titles off the top of my head!

This post is not a whinge

29 10 2010

I feel if I make that the title then it can negate any whinging ahead!

I don’t like winter.

I don’t like leaving the house in the dark and getting home in the dark, which leads on to even leaving work in the dark.
I don’t like the cold.
I don’t like the rain.
(But I do like Christmas!)

On Saturday night it’s the clock change, and so the nights are just going to get darker and darker.

This makes me sad 😦
But it’s not a whinge!

The question is, can I get away with migrating and/or hibernating?

‘You walk at my side’

17 09 2010

Today in prayers, the focus was on Psalm 23, and how when we re-read parts of the Bible, we can get completely new things from them, and how the Psalm talks about a journey, and how the Lord walks alongside us.

“Even when the way goes through
Death Valley,
I’m not afraid
when you walk at my side.
Your trusty shepherd’s crook
makes me feel secure.” – v4

The ‘new’ bit that struck me today was the line “You walk at my side.”
We were asked to fill in the blank for the line: “Even when __________, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side.”
My first thought was “Even when I’m exhausted and worn down.”
It made me think again of the Footprints Poem. How God walks alongside us, but today I was struck at how that includes keeping our pace. If we’re exhausted and plodding slowly, God doesn’t rush on ahead, He stays alongside us. If we’re bubbling up and rushing on, He keeps up!

He walks at our side. 🙂

The love of books

14 09 2010

Earlier this year, for lent, I gave up buying DVDs. They’ve reached the point where they are so cheap I was buying maybe a couple every 2 or 3 weeks – woops! So during lent I only bought 2, and they were for other people – if I have strict rules I can stick to them!

It seems my buying may now have switched to books. A week or 2 ago I put together an excel spreadsheet of all the books I owned, and it turns out I’ve only read about 60% of them. So we can probably see what my aim next lent will be! Again it’s the cheapness, charity shops are fantastic for picking up the stuff you want to read! The only other new books I’ve bought recently were on a 3 for £5 deal, a present, and the new Cecelia Ahern book, which I got at half the RRP anyway!

Now Cecelia Ahern seems to be a somewhat talented author! Me and a friend at work are a bit of a mini fanclub; over the last couple of months we’ve both read all the books she’s written, and the excitement preceding this latest one coming out in paperback was somewhat extreme… and worth the hype too. Since I started it I’ve barely put it down, I read it walking to the train station, on the train, in my lunch break, at my desk before 9am – whenever I can!

Which makes me wonder, why aren’t I as passionate and desperate as that with my Bible?

I really struggle to find things I can blog about without sounding like a first class numpty lately… hence the quietness around here!

Walkers World Cup Crisps 2010

8 08 2010

This year, Walkers launched the World Cup Flavour Cup. They released 15 new flavours of crisps, though not necessarily competing countries, and I made it my aim to try them all. Last night, my housemate, Alana and I sat down and tried them all!
We scored them based on: appealingness of name, realisticness of taste, and actual enjoyment of taste. We took an average for ranking purposes, and the combined results are below!

= 1. American Cheeseburger
= 1. French Garlic Baguette
3. Argentinian Flame Grilled Steak
4. South African Sweet Chutney
5. English Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding
= 6. Italian Spaghetti Bolognaise
= 6. Brazilian Salsa
= 8. Dutch Edam Cheese
= 8. Japanese Teriyaki Chicken
10. Welsh Rarebit
11. German Bratwurst Sausage
12. Irish Stew
13. Spanish Chicken Paella
14. Australian BBQ Kangaroo
15. Scottish Haggis

And here’s the Breakdown of our scoring. Obviously some of the flavours we’d never tried in real life, so couldn’t given them a “realistic” score.

I’m having an internal debate

5 08 2010

You know how sometimes you will walk out of a shop (or off of an internet page) and think, “Hey, that was really good service in there, I should really tell someone about it!” or “Well I’m never going there again!”. I thought this would be a good place for me to share a couple of my experiences with you all; giving credit where credit’s due, and maybe adding a bit of wariness with some other places.

I’m not sure though.

I’m definitely thinking it’s a good idea to hand out a few positive comments to places who’ve done really well, but I’m not sure about the negative stuff.
All I would put would be factual, but I don’t want to get in trouble, and don’t really want to offend (too much!)

Anyone any thoughts or advice?
