This year’s Beth O’Leary read is about two people who have a one night stand on a houseboat, wake up in the morning, and discover they’ve been swept out to sea! The story is told by both characters, alternating narration between chapters.
I was looking at what I wrote about her book last year, and exactly the same rings true for this one, so maybe this is just how she’s writing them now:
“It got steamier than I remember some of her other books getting too, but managed to avoid anything too graphic. I think my issue comes down to the fact that there was just a bit too much yearning…. that said, I still gave it 4 stars on goodreads, because I liked the rest of it!”
But that aside I enjoyed the premise – I was worried initially at how much could happen on a tiny house boat, but gosh you’d be surprised…
There’s a section of the book set in a situation where they go very high up, and the way the author wrote one of the character’s fear of heights was so good. I can’t handle heights at all, and it was written so relatably, it was disconcertingly like I was there!
At another point, things are looking very bleak for the characters, and one of them ends a chapter with “the end”. But as the reader you can see there’s a good 100 pages to go! I imagine this might have a more dramatic effect in the audio book if you weren’t paying attention to how much was left!
The only other disappointment was a couple of typos towards the end, one of which should have been caught by a basic spell check. Given this is the paperback, you’d think they’ve have caught mistakes from the hard back by now – but very much not the end of the world, just distracting when you’re mid flow.
But a fun premise for sure, which I think is what I like most about her books!

Anything to add...?
